Rules and formalities
- Formalities: Germany
- Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, Berlin und Brandenburg
- Waterways in Mecklenburg, Berlin and Brandenburg: The Inland Waterways Regulations (BinSchStrO) apply on the federal waterways. The inland pleasure craft licence (Sportbootführerschein Binnen) is required from 11.03 kW (15 hp) with a combustion engine or 7.5 kW with an electric motor, and under sail from 6 m² of sail area also in Berlin (except Zeuthener See and Dämeritzsee), on the Havel from Pfaueninsel to km 16.4 and on the Nieder Neuendorfer See. A hired boat may be skippered without a licence with a charter certificate after the operator's briefing, only in the areas released for this and with the boat certificate of the waterways and shipping office on board. Fixed bridges are often only 3.5 to 4.5 m high: with the mast up only the lakes are open, on canals and rivers the mast is lowered.
- Elbe, Elbe-Lübeck Canal and Oder: Below Geesthacht the Elbe is a maritime waterway: the German Maritime Waterways Regulations (SeeSchStrO) apply, in the Port of Hamburg also the port traffic regulations. Above Geesthacht, on the Elbe-Lübeck Canal and on the German Oder the Inland Waterways Regulations (BinSchStrO) apply, on the Polish Oder and in Szczecin Polish inland navigation law. With the mast up you get through neither Hamburg nor Lübeck: lower it beforehand.
