Rules and formalities
- Formalities: Germany
- Rhein
- Rhine with Waal, Nederrijn, Lek and IJssel: On the Rhine from Basel to the Dutch border the Rhine Police Regulations (RheinSchPV) apply; in the Netherlands the Rijnvaartpolitiereglement applies on the Bovenrijn, Waal, Pannerdensch Kanaal, Nederrijn and Lek, and the Binnenvaartpolitiereglement on the IJssel. Since 1 April 2023 the German inland boating licence (Sportbootführerschein Binnen) is required on the Rhine, as on the other inland waterways, from 11.03 kW (15 hp) for combustion engines or 7.5 kW for electric motors; boats of 20 to 25 m need the Sportpatent. Pleasure craft under 20 m are small craft: they leave all other vessels the room they need to hold their course and manoeuvre. Once the gauge of a section reaches high-water mark II, navigation there is prohibited.
