The inland boating licence (Sportbootführerschein Binnen) is required from 11.03 kW (15 hp) for combustion engines or 7.5 kW for electric motors. There are 34 barrages between Mainz-Kostheim and Bamberg; many have a self-service lock for pleasure craft next to the large chambers, with its own operating hours. In the large chambers commercial shipping has priority.
