Formalities

Schengen Areaoutside the EU customs unionCurrency: Norwegian krone

Clearing in: Schengen, but outside the EU customs union: on first arrival from abroad, a customs report (Tolletaten) is mandatory, even if there is nothing to declare. The crew may only go ashore after reporting. The same applies in the other direction when leaving the country.

Documents: Licence according to your home country's rules (in Norway, younger skippers need the Båtførerbevis), SRC for the radio, boat papers and insurance. Import and export of larger quantities of alcohol and tobacco are limited.

Fees: Harbour dues per night, in guest harbours often by app. Some fjord municipalities charge additional levies.

Fairway: Fjords and skerries with strong tidal streams, some with tidal races and slack-water times (Saltstraumen and similar narrows). Commercial traffic and fast ferries have priority; the leads (leia) are buoyed.

Nature: Bird sanctuaries and nature reserves with seasonal landing bans, often from April to mid-August. Military restricted areas and firing ranges are published officially (Geonorge) and are avoided here.

Emergency: 112; JRCC Nord-Norge and JRCC Sør-Norge, VHF channel 16 and DSC.
