Formalities
outside the EU customs unionCurrency: US dollar
Clearing in: Independent state, outside the EU and Schengen. Clear in at Bahía del Sol (Estero de Jaltepeque): cross the bar only at high water, by day and behind the pilot of the Hotel Bahía del Sol (VHF channel 16), then port captain, immigration and customs at the marina. In the Gulf of Fonseca since 2021 on Isla Meanguera, all authorities in one office, a panga picks you up. According to sailors, Barillas in the Bahía de Jiquilisco is no longer a port of entry; La Unión and Acajutla are commercial ports.
Ausreise: Clear out before departure and get the zarpe: without it the next state will not clear you in.
Documents: Passport valid for six months; Germans visa-free for up to 90 days, in total for Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua (CA-4). Boat papers, crew list, zarpe from the last country.
Fees: According to sailors (2023), in Bahía del Sol the pilot 50 USD each way, the port captain 1 USD per day in blocks of 30 days, the zarpe 40 USD; immigration is free for EU citizens.
Fairway: Buoyage follows IALA system B: red to starboard when entering from seaward, the reverse of Europe. The bar off Bahía del Sol breaks even in moderate swell: in March 2024 a yacht was lost there behind the pilot, and the Panama Posse has advised against it since; only in calm seas and at high water. The coast is open, with surf on the beaches; only the esteros and the Gulf of Fonseca offer shelter.
Nature: Bahía de Jiquilisco (biosphere reserve) and Estero de Jaltepeque (Ramsar site): mangroves, go slow, fishing only with permission.
Tropical storm season: On the Pacific 15 May to 30 November, the coast mostly lies south of the storm tracks; tropical storms bring heavy rain. Insurers usually restrict cover: check your policy.
Emergency: 911; navy (Fuerza Naval) on VHF channel 16.
